Time Stands Still Opening Night Video
By Christopher Moore, Broadway Magazine
"Laura and I have a unique friendship because her breakthrough was my breakthrough. We were both pretty green when 'Sight Unseen' premiered in 1992," says playwright Donald Margulies, who has earned praise from Broadway opening night critics for Time Stands Still.
Described by the New York Times as "flawless," Broadway's newest hit drama was directed by Daniel Sullivan and stars Laura Linney, Alicia Silverstone, Brian d'Arcy James, and Eric Bogosian. Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine joined the cast on opening night to celebrate and discuss the production.
"I feel good. I'm happily relieved that we're up and open. I'm excited about the run. I love this play and I love these people. You know, there's nothing better when you're in a situation like this. Really, it's heaven," smiled Laura Linney who plays Sarah Goodwin. The accomplished actress has earned Academy Award nominations and Broadway accolades for her extraordinary depth and versatility as an actress.
"I love this play and I love working with these people, so it's heaven. It's all sort of strange. It's anticlimactic on opening night," echoes Alicia Silverstone, who first appeared on Broadway in The Graduate.
"These are incredible people. All so unbelievably unique and passionate about who they are and what they do," shared Broadway favorite Brian d'Arcy James.
"Laura is a very intense actress," reveals actor and playwright Eric Bogosian who stars as Richard Ehrlich in Time Stands Still, "She brings a level of reality to her roles that is very exciting when you are on-stage in a dramatic moment."
With a gifted quartet of actors, Time Stand Still offers a small cast and an intimate story that touches upon a range of present-day issues.
"It's not that I have any insights into modern society, what I do try to do with my play is set out for audiences to see aspects of their own life that they may not have considered before," shares playwright Donald Margulies.
"I just really try to find the truth in what she's saying, and be as alive and present and awake and for-real in the moment as I can be," offers Ms. Silverstone.
The contemporary resonance of the story is not lost on the members of the cast.
"We're all watching Haiti at this moment and what they're going through, and knowing that there are many people who are there helping in Haiti who are the counterparts of the characters we play. The photo-journalists, the journalists, the rescue workers," notes Laura Linney, who's character has been injured while covering the war in Iraq.
"We discussed it a lot...exactly what had happened to her? What was the accident that caused these injuries? What would the injuries be?...I knew of a great make-up artist in Mindy Hall," shares Ms. Linney on the evolution of her character's physical make-up.
