Nine Premieres On Broadway: Movie Musical Comes Home

By Christopher Moore, Broadway Magazine

Fresh from its 5 Golden Globe Nominations, the new movie musical Nine celebrated a red carpet Broadway spectacular opening night complete with beautiful stars and legendary personalities. Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine were there on the Broadway red carpet to bring you a bit of the magic.

"I'm very excited that so many friends are here. I get to see all the cast again. It was really a beautiful shoot, we spent a lot of time together. Many, many months. I think we have a good bonding there forever, because we all got to share the fear. What it is to make a musical, the excitement and the healthy fear, you know, of doing something new like dancing and singing," smiles the radiant Penelope Cruz on the red carpet.

Nine Premieres On Broadway: Movie Musical Comes Home

"We think Penelope is great. The whole cast is fantastic. I think it's going to be a great movie," shares tycoon Donald Trump before the premiere.

"I'm excited. I'm happy. It's taken three years to get here. I'm so happy we're in New York because it's where it started. This beautiful production-- Tommy Tune's great production. So,that it comes full circle. It sort of one of those great things," reflects Nine director Rob Marshall.

"Well, what's interesting about Nine is that it really is a story of infidelity, and there's a little bit of the leading character Guido in all of us, but I think Tiger Woods, at this moment in our zeitgeist, got an extra portion of the Guido," offers Broadway legend Tommy Tune, who directed the first Broadway production of Nine.

"I'm very happy, very excited. I can't wait to see her," beams legend Goldie Hawn as she talks about her daughter Kate Hudson, who also stars in Nine, adding, "I'm sure I'm going to weep. It's exciting to see your daughter shine."

"It's amazing. From Broadway to the movies–30 years. Just like Chicago," reflects Nine producer Harvey Weinstein of The Weinstein Company. The Weinsteins and Mr. Marshall were also responsible for the hit movie musical Chicago, which helped to ignite the renaissance of the movie musical form.

"Last night, they screened it (Nine) for all the people of the Broadway community, and they loved the movie. That's what I'm told, and that was the highlight to me…so tonight is icing on the cake," says star Nicole Kidman as she headed into the theatre.

With award nominations and an all-star cast that also includes Daniel Day Lewis, Judi Dench, and Sophia Loren; Nine has built a positive buzz as the film hits theatres in New York and LA this weekend, before opening nation wide on Christmas day.
