Memphis Rocks Broadway Opening Night

By Ella Robinson, Broadway Magazine

After wowing audiences in both Seattle and San Diego, the much talked about musical Memphis has now rumbled onto Broadway. Co-writer Joe DiPietro calls the Broadway opening "pretty fantastical", and the critics don't disagree; Memphis is already boasting a considerable number of glowing reviews. Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine bring you opening night coverage of Broadway's newest musical hit.

Cast and critics alike are ecstatic about the show's opening; Bon Jovi member and co-creator of Memphis David Bryan called opening night "one of the best evenings of my life", and the New York Times called the show "a sincere new musical with plenty of energetic choreography and a talented, appealing, hard-changing cast."

According to Richie Sambora, the lead guitarist for Bon Jovi, the musical has just kept getting better since he first saw it in San Jose, and choreographer Sergio Trujillo says that, "it's been a long road...one of the things we've done for the show, in each of its versions, is that we've added more and more dances".

Most of the cast and crew have been working together for six years, getting to know one another and developing their production along the way. Chad Kimball, who plays DJ Huey Calhoun, says that the writers are "used to us voicing our ideas; they're interested in making the story work."

It has undoubtedly been a rollercoaster ride for this musical about segregation in the 1950's, but the show has ultimately come out on top. A plethora of people showed up for the premier, including Gina and Patrick Neely of the Food network, Steve West from Danger Danger, and actress Harriet Harris. All had high expectations for the production they were going to see, bolstered by both early reviews and the reputation for greatness that both DiPietro and Bryan have attained over the course of their respective careers.

Memphis has tightened loose ends and turned up the heat for Broadway, collecting celebrated reviews because of it. Watch the entire opening night video and additional Memphis on Broadway coverage right here on www.Broadway.tv.
