Jane Fonda Broadway Opening Night Red Carpet

By Christopher Moore, Broadway Magazine

In a Broadway season that feels packed with talent and remarkable productions, Jane Fonda's Broadway return has merited a special place in the Broadway landscape. Tonight, a collection of stars aligned to celebrate the opening night of Jane Fonda in 33 Variations, and Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine were there to share in the excitement.

In a wonderful moment of Broadway synchronicity, international country music icon Dolly Parton, who co-starred with Jane Fonda in the film of 9 to 5 was on hand to cheer for her friend. Dolly Parton is currently shaping 9 to 5 The Musical for its upcoming Broadway run.

"We're friends," Dolly Parton said to our Broadway.tv team about Jane Fonda, "and we've worked together now for 30 years off and on, helping each other do things. I'm over rehearsing 9 to 5 the Musical. She's opening tonight. So I said, I've got to run over and see her."

"She was wonderful to us. She came to our opening back at the out of town try-out in Los Angeles. She gave us her blessing," says Broadway favorite Stephanie Block who will play the musical version of Fonda's 9 to 5 character, "I just want to be in her presence. I want to see her brilliance. I want to see her talent. I want to say 'Hey, girl, I'm right across the street' and I think that's just an amazing omen."

"We're watching Jane Fonda make her return to Broadway triumphantly in the new Moises Kaufman play," offers Broadway's First Lady Rosie O'Donnell, before adding with a smile, "and Rose McGowan is here, which makes it all good too."

"My friend Samantha Mathis is in this play, and I've very excited to go support her," smiles Rose McGowan, "and I'm very excited to see Jane Fonda...as anybody intelligent would be."

Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden is also bringing her talent to the Broadway stage in the eagerly anticipated production of God of Carnage. She took a few minutes to walk the red carpet attending the opening night of 33 Variations.
