Broadway HAIR: Let The Idols Shine In

By Christopher Moore, Broadway Magazine

The Tony Award winning revival of HAIR is keeping it fresh with a new cast that includes a couple of former American Idols, and some new Broadway faces as well. The new 'Tribe' will debut on Tuesday, March 9, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre . However, Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine had a chance to be a part of the be-in with the new Tribe as they came together for the first time.

"I think the people we picked for this tribe are not only talented, but somehow they have that hunger and thirst we're looking for in the room," shares HAIR director Diane Paulus.

In a statement, Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public Theater commented, "We've got a new Tribe- utterly unique, and just as talented and joyous as our first company. They are going through a full rehearsal period with Diane Paulus and her wonderful team, and when they burst out on the 9th of March, it's going to be an electric event."

Electric is right. With their groovy bios, the new cast is doing all they can to keep the loving feeling of the original production. Joining this tribe will be Ace Young, last seen on Broadway in Grease, and Diana DiGarmo, the former American Idols with Broadway credits and some Broadway cred too.

Ace Young will play Berger, and according to his bio he "has made love to the entire world and is bringing free love, drugs, and rock n' roll back...Ace is riding high on his crazy crazy trip."

Diana DeGarmo will play Shelia, and her bio for HAIR states that she " is blooming with love that the universe is blessing me with this incredible opportunity."

"She's very special. She's a tremendous actress, I think. She's to me the closest thing to what I've always imagined I wanted Shelia to be like," HAIR co-creator James Rado.

"These songs are amazing," said Ace Young.

No word on what happened to the old Tribe, but we guess they're feeling fine. Let the sun shine in!
