Broadway Orbits Golden Globes Video

By Christopher Moore, Broadway Magazine

While the Golden Globes famously celebrate achievements in the areas of film and television, this year the spirit of Broadway was very much alive on the red carpet as Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine discovered. Familiar Broadway faces and Broadway-influenced productions were front and center in the list of nominees and presenters at this year's Golden Globes. According to reports, 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards brought in 16.9 million viewers on the NBC. A gain of 14 per cent over last year's show.

Paul McCartney said he was looking forward to everything and the party. His views were shared by Tony Award Winner Glen Close, another winner with a Broadway connection. The

"This is very, very exciting–all these movie stars and TV people mashed together in the rain," says Neil Patrick Harris, who earned accolades for his work as host of the Tony Awards last year. As stars like Jude Law, Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Scarlett Johansson and many more playing on Broadway, the distance between Hollywood and the Broadway stage is closer than you might imagine.

Could Meryl Streep bring her luminosity to the Broadway stage soon as well?

"I don't have a plan for that, but I'd like to,"Golden Globe Winner Meryl Streep tells Broadway.tv in the press room at the Golden Globes, "I always said that when my children grew up and went to college that I could maybe think about doing that...and that happened this year, so I'm looking–if you know any plays...?"

"You know, you just enjoy these things in different ways. I think for me, the tap root is the theatre. I grew up in a theatre family. The first 12 years of my career was almost exclusively New York Theatre. I keep going back to it, like a swallow to Capistrano," said Golden Globe winner John Lithgow on the difference between stage and screen, who was heading back to New York to continue work on his next play.

"It's just great that Ryan and the whole creative team went to the far reaches of Broadway to find some talent for the show," smiled Matthew Morrison of the hit show Glee, which was honored with a Golden Globe Award. The beloved Glee is a Broadway favorite on television, and celebrates the love of the musical.

"More people saw the pilot of Glee then my entire 10 year career on Broadway, so the numbers are staggering," said Matthew Morrison to Broadway.tv on the red carpet at the Golden Globes.

Jenna Ushkowitz of Glee smiled on the red carpet as she recalled: "I had a Golden Globes party last year where I just watched it from my living room, so it's pretty incredible. We're just so grateful."

"It's very nice, I have to say," says director Rob Marshall who's film version of the Broadway musical Nine eared 5 Golden Globe nominations, "I'm so thrilled that I launched here from Broadway. I remember when I did Chicago for instance...it was sort of a whirlwind, you know, because I never thought Chicago would do what it did."

"Coming from Rock and Roll, I feel a bit like I'm gate crashing," smiles David Howell Evens also known as U2's The Edge on the red carpet. His production of Spider-Man is now slated to bow on Broadway in the fall.

"Dream. Dream and don't ever stop dreaming, baby," offers Precious star Mo'Nique, "I'm walking in the midst of my dream."
