Broadway Secret Bowling League

By Leora Kanner, Broadway Magazine

As it turns out, those in the Broadway theater community don't just hang around singing and dancing in their free time. In fact, it may come as a surprise to learn that one popular pastime of many in the theater world is the completely unrelated sport of bowling! Now www.Broadway.tv takes you behind the lanes to see the whole story.

The Broadway Bowling League is now a well-established group of people who come together in teams and compete on a regular basis. One bowler has been bowling with the League since 1991. There are 22 teams and they bowl every Thursday night with practice at 11:30. This all sounds very casual, but what is interesting is that every bowler is involved in the world of Broadway or off-Broadway.

Broadway Secret Bowling League

This league is made up of the entire Broadway community, not just the actors.  There are stage-hands, directors, wardrobe people, tech crew, and beyond.  Everyone is represented in this diverse group.  A plethora of shows are spoken for as well; one girl works with Legally Blonde, two others act in Mamma Mia!, one couple comes from the New World Stages as tech, and a stage-manager for the Off-Broadway show "Mask" plays as well.  The participants profess how great it is to get together "completely outside [their] shows" and unite as one solid community.

The league is an excellent way for the bowlers to have 'a lot of fun together" and make friends. As some bowlers describe it:  It's a place where "everyone gets together" just to hang out and "see people you haven't seen all week."  It is also a wonderful way to network, a vital aspect of the theater world.

But this league is not only a practical and social competition; it is also about giving back to the community. Half of the money that is contributed to participate is given to charities such as "Equity Fights Aids." With its good intentions and its social possibilities, the Broadway Bowling League has made secured its place in the heart of its bowlers. As one participant perfectly exclaims: "wohooo….bowling!"
