All About Me Exposed To Broadway Press
By Edith Haight, Broadway Magazine
"People can expect probably the best Broadway show they have ever seen. That is an extravagant claim, but I'm know for my extravagant claims...and I'm promising, promising everyone the time of their lives," woos the iconic theatrical legend Dame Edna Everage at the press event for the upcoming Broadway production of All About Me.
All About Me stars Michael Feinstein and Dame Edna in a joint venture at The Henry Miller Theatre beginning previews February 22 and opening on Thursday, March 18, 2010. Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine caught up with the stars as they discussed the show.
"It's a combination of a lot of different elements. It's taking what I do and what Edna does and putting the two of us together in a way that we call 'strange bedfellows' but will give us the opportunity to explore different aspects of our being that we wouldn't have been able to do," reflects Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum selling, five-time Grammy nominated performer.
"Working with Dame Edna is a constant improvisation because I never know what Dame Edna is going to say or do. Never. It is always an experience of being in the moment...I know that every show is going to be different," smiles Mr. Feinstein as he discusses working with the dazzling and bedazzled Dame Edna.
Of course, Dame Edna is a housewife, megastar, investigative journalist, social anthropologist, children's book illustrator, diseuse, chanteuse, swami, monstre sacre, polymath, adviser to British royalty, grief counsellor, spin doctor and icon is, arguably, the most popular and gifted woman in the world today.
"It's been lovely. It's been a rocky road. I like doing a show on my own. I don't like anyone else invading my space...but it's been lovely. We've become close friends," says Dame Edna, who is not used to sharing the Broadway spotlight.
"I think our show is really an affirmation of life because it is about celebrating the joyfulness of life, also the absurdity of it--the irony of it. Edna always looks at the ironic aspects of life," smiles Michael Feinstein.
Joining these two diverse mega-talents is celebrated playwright Christopher Durang, who is writing continuity for the production.
"It's been fun. It's been intense, because it's been coming together rather quickly. There are lots of changes that happen," says the playwright.
"When I met Barry (Humphries, the creator of Dame Edna) I told him how I felt incredibly humble about writing anything for Dame Edna because that is so much his character and he knows how she speaks," confides playwright Christopher Durang.
With a unique mix of exceptional talents involved, All About Me could well live up to Dame Edna's prediction. Check out the entire video feature with the cast and creatives of All About Me right now on Broadway.tv.
