The Tony's are here!!! The Silver Medallion of Comedy and Tragedy is back to show their face(s)! Nominations are now in the for the coveted 26 highly competitive stage categories for the American Theatre Wing's 65th annual Antoinette Perry "Tony" Awards. The mounting anticipation in Hollywood and on Broadway was eased on May 3, 2011 as Tony Award-winning veteran actor Matthew Broderick and Tony Award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose took the stage to announce the nominations at The New York Public Library for the Performing Art's Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center at Lincoln Center.
Broadway.TV caught up with the hosts of this year's nominations immediately after the announcements. "It's a very impressive list," smiled Matthew Broderick out on the red carpet following the announcements. "A phenomenal list," said Anika Noni Rose. "It's a great, great year for theatre." Looking back this year on so many incredible, ground-breaking plays and musicals, the selection committee certainly had its work cut out. "I liked practically everything I saw," laughed Broderick of this year on Broadway. "I had a good time this season. I saw a lot." The anticipation has been enormous for the nominations in the past few weeks, with colossal buzz passed along the Great White Way from opening night to opening night. "It's a nerve-wracking time of year because there are lots of awards that start happening and you're either on these lists or not… but it ends up as really exciting"

The Book of Mormon has generated perhaps the most buzz of any musical on Broadway in recent years, and it certainly has shown at nomination time. The musical took home the most nominations of any production, with 14 nods from the committee. The Scottsboro Boys followed closely behind, with 12 nominations. These two new musicals took home by far the most nominations of any productions this season. Abaire's Good People, Butterworth's Jerusalem, Guirgus' The Motherf**ker with the Hat, and Stafford's War Horse were all nominated for Best Play, with The Book of Mormon, The Scottsboro Boys, Catch Me If You Can, and Sister Act all taking home the final nominations for Best Musical.
Taking home the coveted nominations for Best Direction in a Play were Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris for their incredible work in War Horse, Joel Grey & George C. Wolfe for The Normal Heart, Anna D. Shapiro for the controversial and hilarious The Motherf**ker with the Hat, and Daniel Sullivan, The Merchant of Venice. Sullivan's The Merchant of Venice also took home a nomination for Al Pacino and Lily Rabe for Best Actor/Actress in a Leading Role in a Play. Joining Pacino in the category were Brian Bedford, The Importance of Being Earnest, Bobby Cannavale, The Motherf**ker with the Hat, Joe Mantello, The Normal Heart, and Mark Rylance, Jerusalem. For Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Lily Rabe was joined by Nina Arianda, Born Yesterday, Frances McDormand, Good People, Vanessa Redgrave, Driving Miss Daisy, and Hannah Yelland, Brief Encounter for their incredible performances.
Meanwhile, the Musical categories are shining with talent. Norbert Leo Butz, Catch Me If You Can, Josh Gad, The Book of Mormon, Joshua Henry, The Scottsboro Boys, Andrew Rannells, The Book of Mormon, and Tony Sheldon, Priscilla Queen of the Desert all took home nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. The Actress category is an equally competitive nomination list including Sutton Foster, Anything Goes, Beth Leavel, Baby It's You!, Patina Miller, Sister Act and Donna Murphy, The People in the Picture.
There were shocking nominations, upsets, tears and joy, guaranteeing that this year's Tony Awards are not to be missed. Presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, the 2010-2011 nominees were selected by an independent committee of 22 theatre professionals appointed directly by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. This year, the Tony's celebrate 65 years of brilliance on Broadway and will be broadcast live from the Beacon Theatre, airing on CBS, Sunday, June 12th, 8-11 p.m. (ET/PT). The Tony Award is one of the most coveted honors bestowed upon theatre professionals each year.
