Today In Broadway History: Masterpiece Born February 10

BROADWAY MAGAZINE- An American masterpiece was born on this day in 1949 when Arthur Millers Death Of A Salesman opened at the Morosco Theatre on Broadway. The production was directed by Elia Kazan. For the record, Death Of A Salesman won 6 Tony Awards, and also earned Arthur Miller a Pulitzer Prize. Of course, Mr. Miller is currently represented on Broadway with the fine production of A View From The Bridge (photo left).

For those looking for some comedy to balance the great American tragedy, we offer a bonus history highlight.

Performer, lyricist and composer Jimmy Durante was born in Brooklyn February 10th 1893. Known as “Schnozzola” because of his big nose, this talented Italian-American jumped to stardom early from his 1935 Broadway play Jumbo, produced by Billy Rose. He also composed remembered songs such as “Inka Dinka Doo” and got the fame to make The Jimmy Durante Show during decades.

His appearances on Broadway also include plays such as “Red, Hot and Blue”, “The New Yorkers” and “Keep of the grass”. From his legend we shall hear him say as always “Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!”
