American Idol Syesha Mercado Is A Broadway ‘Dream Girl’
Being ‘Too Broadway’ Is A Good Thing
The national tour of Dreamgirls the musical opens Sunday in New York at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem.
American Idol Season 7’s Syesha Mercado may have come in 3rd place, but this dream girl is about to fill some big shoes.
Mercado will be playing Deena Jones in the national tour the role that Beyonce played in the Dreamgirls movie which garnered the amazing Jennifer Hudson(whom we recently interviewed) an Academy Award!!!
Mercado was quoted talking about her time on idol she says about the experience and how some of the judges look down on being “too Broadway,” “(The judges) say a lot of things about Broadway, but it’s ok…Broadway is a good thing. I love Broadway.”
Mercado knows she is playing a role that Beyonce is most known for in Dreamgirls and she says, “I definitely pay homage to Beyonce but I try to focus on what the character is to me. We both grew up in a very poor background. I lived in the projects when I was younger, so I know what it’s like to come from nothing.”
