Women’s Olympics Gymnastics Trials Versus Broadway
International Broadway Acrobats Challenge US Olympic Feats
For anyone following the recent accomplishments of Shawn Johnson or Chellsie Memmel in the US Women’s Olympics Gymnastics Trials on NBC, Broadway has some surprises. Whether planned or not, the feats of physical accomplishment currently on full display on Broadway in Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy at the Broadway Theatre seem to rival the athleticism of even the finest Olympic performers. Of course, one needn’t chose one over the other, and both celebrate the marriage of physical and mental accomplishment. It is fitting that in this Olympic season, Broadway offers up a pure spectacle driven heart and soul by the athleticism of the artist. More gymnastics than dance, and far more magic that one might expect walking in. If this production is Broadway’s response to the Olympics, it is a very compelling case to be sure. Look for the full review later this week.
