Broadway Looks West For Best?
BROADWAY MAGAZINE- The best show of the Broadway season may not be announced for Broadway yet. The upcoming production of Green Day’s American Idiot could well find itself on Broadway after its run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. With his tongue firmly planted in his cheek (the one with the safety pin through it, no doubt), Jim Harrington of the Oakland News offers up 5 other musical ideas based on punk rock albums of the past. Harrington hopes the Green Day musical will start a trend, and offers suggestions for new shows based on albums by the Sex Pistols, Social Distortion, X, Dead Kennedys, and the Buzzcocks. You can read his ideas here.
Of course, the real musical version of American Idiot has considerable Broadway muscle with Michael Mayer helming the production. Mr. Mayer knows how to shape a musical, and with American Idiot he has material that has been compared to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band and Pink Floyd’s The Wall and The Who’s Tommy for it’s ability to weave a narrative through music. Get to know Green Day here in this 3 minute video.
