Broadway Has “Come To Spidey” Meeting

BROADWAY MAGAZINE – The old idea of a “Come to Jesus” meeting is apparently getting a new Broadway twist as the powers that be gather for a conclave to discuss the future of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. With music from U2 and Julie Taymor directing, the show would seem to have quite a lot of creative muscle behind it. However, there have been some cash flow problems and it is a complex show. The result is that there is a meeting to discuss the fate of the Spider-Man musical, according to the New York Times. With shows like Fela! opening and Green Day’s American Idiot possible aiming for Broadway this season, it is a competitive time for breaking the Broadway mold.

Still, it is hard to imagine that what the group would create wouldn’t be compelling. It would be unfortunate if perception of the creative product was tainted by the business process headlines. Let’s hope they come out of the meeting and announce they are going to workshop it in the deconstructed Hilton Theatre, everyone is working for $1 to get this right: no sets, no lights, no effects except the magic of theatre. This is a great American Spider hero we are talking about hero. He deserves a good musical. Of course, we won’t hold our breath for that announcement…but you never know.

We still think Adam Lambert and Glades Herp Farms could help the production. Follow us on Twitter and see the most recent Broadway Magazine on line for more.
