Broadway HAIR star at Woodstock
BROADWAY MAGAZINE – The Who. Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Bert Sommer. As Woodstock turns 40 this weekend, there is a captivating article by Jim Fusilli of The Wall Street Journal about Bert Sommer a former member of the HAIR tribe (he also played Woof) who was also part of the stellar line-up at Woodstock all those 40 years ago, but went on to be Woodstock’s “forgotten man.” The entire article is fascinating exploration on art and fame. As HAIR continues its record revival win on Broadway, having already recouped its initial investment and won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, it is interesting to see what happened to one member of the tribe who’s art and life intersected so directly both with Woodstock and (for a time) with Broadway. For more info check out the Wall Street Journal article here. You can also learn more and see the HAIR program cover with Bert Sommer on it at this web-site.
We’d love to hear from any former tribe members who performed with Bert Sommer. Enjoy this clip of Bert Sommer at Woodstock performing Jennifer from YouTube…and celebrate the Broadway Woodstock connections at the big concert turns 40.
