90210’s Shannen Doherty To Direct “Spring Awakening” Musical
90210 Revival Features Tony Winning Musical
For those who followed Beverly Hills 90210 the first time around, news of the upcoming revival should provoke a range of reactions. For Broadway lovers, the new sequel to the hit FOX series offers a distinctly Broadway connection. Apparently, Brenda Walsh (played by Shannen Doherty in the series) is all set to return as the High School Drama teacher. Producer of the new CW sequel to 90210 reveals that “There will be a musical within our show. She (Brenda/Shannen) will be the guest director [for the musical].” According to an article by Hanh Nguyen on ZapToIt.com, the musical she’ll direct is Duncan Sheik’s “Spring Awakening.”
“We’re doing ‘Spring Awakening,” the article quotes executive producer Jeff Judah. “It’s a great play, a great musical. We thought it would be a really cool thing to do a contemporary musical instead of doing ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ or something that a lot of high schools do. So if we could do a contemporary musical and put that in the show, it’s sort of also talking about how the show has changed in the last 20 years.”
With its up front look at sexuality among young people, the selection of “Spring Awakening” seems a direct challenge to the clean high school world of Disney’s hits Camp Rock and High School Musical. The new 90210 premieres on the CW channel September 2.
