“Phantom” has Record Weekly Gross

In the story of a musical that has succeeded on Broadway for almost 23 years, last week The Phantom of the Opera celebrated its highest grossing week ever.  For the 8 performances during the week ending on January 2, the production grossed $1,390,530.53.  This announcement was made on the same day that 8 Broadway shows closed their doors, which makes this show’s longevity an anomaly in the Broadway world.  After shattering the previously held record for number of shows on Broadway from another Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera continues to be the definition of a Broadway institution.
