The Transport Group announced today that it will present the New York premiere of a new musical by Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flinn, Lysistrata Jones, which re-imagines Aristophane’s Lysistrata in modern times. Theater aficionados may remember that in the original tale, the women of Athens refuse to have sex with their men until they no longer engage in war. Beane and Flinn will bring the play to the “stage” instead with the ladies of Athens U refusing to sleep with their boyfriends on the basketball team until they win a game. Consequently, the performance takes place not on a traditional stage, but on a basketball court.
Discussing the unique theater setting Finn explains, “Finding actors who can sing, dance, act, and dribble is proving quite easy. New York actors can do anything. But finding a basketball court in Manhattan that’s available between 8 o’clock and 10 o’clock was a toughie.” Despite this tongue-in-cheek trouble the show will be taking place on the basketball court of the Judson Memorial Church gymnasium with previews beginning in May 2011.
