With Andrew Lloyd Webber hard at work on the Coney Island pre-quel or sequel…hopefully the equal of the Broadway hit Phantom Of The Opera, John Simon of Bloomberg reminds us what is so brilliant about the original. In a new review, the esteemed and not easy-to-please critic writes eloquently of the charms of this Broadway production. Included in the catalog of charms are Hal Prince’s “cunning direction” and the production’s “visual opulence.” Looks like Mr. Simon has surrendered to the music of the night.
