Broadway’s “Love Never Dies” Gets Spider-Man Disease
BROADWAY MAGAZINE- Call it the Broadway Spider-Man disease. The sequel to Phantom Of The Opera, currently playing in London and set for a Fall 2010 Broadway debut has been postponed. According to multiple reports, the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Love Never Dies will be postponed until the Spring of 2011.
The last eagerly awaited Broadway production to continue to extend its awaitedness is the still-to-come Spider-Man don’t-call-it-a-musical from U2 and Julie Taymor.
However, the delay for Sir Andrew’s musical is health related according to a statement from producers.
Mr. Webber is unable to travel to the US to handle pre-production due to prostrate cancer, though reportedly he will still work on a UK production of Wizard of Oz.
We wish him good health and a swift arrival for the Phantom in the Spring. Some things are well worth the wait.

While I have no doubt ALW is dealing with serious health issues and wish him the best with his recovery, I do feel this is an excuse. This is not mounting a completely new show that has never been done. This is, essentially, re-creating what according to RUG is a successful show currently running in the West End. ALW’s work on the show is - for the most part - DONE. With today’s technology, there are DEFINITE work arounds for him not being able to be in NYC. With less technological advances, Howard Ashman was able to work on Beauty and the Beast quite literally from his death bed. Truly, I believe this delay has more to do with the poor quality of the plot than anything else, but, for some reason, RUG cannot admit that this show is NOT the blockbuster fabulous piece of theatre that the fans have (NOT) been anxiously waiting for.
